MODULE 79 – Orange Data Mining Software Video Tutorial (contributed by Gonca Demirel)

Introduction

The Orange Data Mining Software is yet competent data analysis and visualization software, that includes many machine learning algorithms in it. The MODULE 79 Orange Data Mining Software Video Tutorial provides a detailed understanding of the software with relevant data and diagrams.

What’s Orange?

Orange is a component-based data mining and machine learning software suite, featuring a visual programming front-end for exploratory data analysis and visualization, and Python bindings and libraries for scripting. It includes a set of components for data pre-processing, feature scoring and filtering, modelling, model evaluation, and exploration techniques. It is implemented in C++ and Python. Its graphical user interface builds upon the cross-platform Qt framework. Orange is distributed free under the GPL. It is maintained and developed at the Bioinformatics Laboratory of the Faculty of Computer and Information Science, University of Ljubljana, Slovenia

Orange is supported on various versions of Linux, Apple\’s Mac OS X, and Microsoft Windows. The module helps the use to get a hands-on approach of the Orange software.

MODULE 76 – Latex Math Editing Language Tutorial Book

Disclaimer: This planned module’s content has not yet been created by Dr. Ertek or one of his colleagues. Instead, we  recommend and link to a video training available from Cornell University.

Source Book:
http://www.math.cornell.edu/~whieldon/Math224_files/More_Math_into_LaTex.pdf

Introduction

LaTeX is a document markup language and document preparation system for the TeX typesetting program. The MODULE 76 Latex Math Editing Language Tutorial Book serves the purpose of educating you to know the appropriate use of the program.

The term LaTeX refers only to the language in which documents are written, not to the editor application used to write those documents. In order to create a document in LaTeX, a .tex file must be created using some form of text editor. While most text editors can be used to create a LaTeX document, a number of editors have been created specifically for working with LaTeX.  LaTeX is intended to provide a high-level language that accesses the power of TeX. LaTeX essentially comprises a collection of TeX macros and a program to process LaTeX documents. Because the TeX formatting commands are very low-level, it is usually much simpler for end-users to use LaTeX. LaTeX is widely used in academia. It is also used as the primary method of displaying formulas on Wikipedia. As a primary or intermediate format, e.g., translating DocBook and other XML-based formats to PDF, LaTeX is used because of the high quality of typesetting achievable by TeX.

MODULE 75 – Concept Mapping Video Tutorial (contributed by Berk Bagatur)

Introduction

Concept mapping is a technical method for representing knowledge in graphs. The MODULE 75 Concept Mapping Video Tutorial explains in details about the perception of Concept Mapping.

Concept Making-a brief sketch:

Concept making involves representing any data or knowledge in pictorial diagrams such as graphs. Knowledge graphs are networks of concepts. Networks are edged by two nodes and links. The nodes represent concepts and the links represent the relations between concepts. Concepts and links are sometimes labeled. Links can be non-, uni- or bi-directional. Concepts and links may be categorized, they can be simply associative, specified or divided in categories such as causal or temporal relations. The concept mapping technique was developed by Prof. Joseph D. Novak at Cornell University in the 1960s. This work was based on the theories of David Ausubel, who stressed the importance of prior knowledge in being able to learn about new concepts. The module elaborates the concept of Concept Making, providing you a better understanding of the technique.

Concept mapping can be done for several purposes

  • To generate ideas (brain storming, etc.)
  • To design a complex structure (long texts, hypermedia, large web sites, etc.)
  • To communicate complex ideas
  • To aid learning by explicitly integrating new and old knowledge
  • To assess understanding or diagnose misunderstanding
